What if you could turn people's obsession with photo-sharing into Bitcoin adoption? We're experimenting with it right now with a photo sharing-slash-bitcoin faucet site. Turn "likes" into Bitcoin? Why not.

Here in our little startup Bitcoin company in this corner of the world, we have a policy that no idea is too crazy to be explored as long as:
a) It is Bitcoin or crypto related, b) It is practical, creative, and fun, and/or c) It will help accelerate Bitcoin adoption.
So even though we are very busy working on numerous practical applications for Bitcoin in the real world, we’re experimenting on some fun ideas as well.
We were wasting time waiting in an airport one day and started talking about how we can possibly monetize “likes” on social media. What better way to teach new people about Bitcoin than to make it a part of pop culture? The Philippines has been dubbed the “selfie capital of the world” and is totally addicted to social media. As a whole, people here spend more time in front of Facebook and other social media sites than watch TV. Social networking penetration is the highest in the world here as well. So why not make Bitcoin a part of this phenomenon?
Within a few weeks, we came up with BitStars PH, a photo-sharing site slash Bitcoin faucet where people can post photos (specifically, “selfies”) of themselves, possibly get tipped Bitcoin by other users, and get a chance to win some Bitcoin at the end of the day in a daily contest. The users can also opt to donate their tips and winning to a charity of their choice, just like this user did for Gawad Kalinga, a non-rofit org that builds houses for the less fortunate.
This is an Alpha version and will hopefully evolve into a better product in time but the only way to do that is to actually have people use it, so please feel free to play around with this and share with others. We aren’t taking ourselves too seriously with this and would love to hear comments, feedback, and criticisms.
Edit: helloluis is my business partner and is the developer who made this whole thing and he is here to answer some stuff I couldn't ;)

The problem with Bitcoin Faucet sites

For all of you that are trying to collect free BTC through the various bitcoin faucet sites, you need to learn something about Bitcoin transaction fees before you waste a lot of time.
The bitcoin network has optional transaction fees that are generally so small, most people do not worry about them (think fractions of a cent.) A person making a transaction would include this fee to encourage the miners, the nodes on the network creating new blocks and recording transactions, to process the transaction more quickly. Most transactions will process without a fee, but the fee speeds things up.
But under certain circumstances, these fees become non-optional. Fom the Bitcoin Wiki:
A transaction may be safely sent without fees if these conditions are met:
Otherwise, the reference implementation will round up the transaction size to the next thousand bytes and add a fee of 0.1 mBTC (0.0001 BTC) per thousand bytes[1]. As an example, a fee of 0.1 mBTC (0.0001 BTC) would be added to a 746 byte transaction, and a fee of 0.2 mBTC (0.0002 BTC) would be added to a 1001 byte transaction. Users may increase the default 0.0001 BTC/kB fee setting, but cannot control transaction fees for each transaction. Bitcoin-Qt does prompt the user to accept the fee before the transaction is sent (they may cancel the transaction if they are not willing to pay the fee).
Note that a typical transaction is 500 bytes, so the typical transaction fee for low-priority transactions is 0.1 mBTC (0.0001 BTC), regardless of the number of bitcoins sent.
In the case of people collecting from faucet sites, you do not meet any of these conditions.
You are essentially collecting BTC that you probably will never be able to transfer out of your wallet without paying a transaction fee that exceeds the amount of BTC that you've collected. If you do not incldue this fee, the netwrok will drop your transaction before it even gets to the miners, so even those who process transactions without fees will not see your transaction. In other words, you are wasting your time.
Feel free to ask any questions.

Bitcoin prices have soared to over $300/BTC today, and pretty much every bitcoin "faucet" site is down. Can I expect these sites to remain down until prices come back to Earth?

Pretty much every site linked from CoinReaper and Land of Bitcoin is down. I assume that since exchange rates have risen, these sites would be paying out more than they take in from advertising.

A somewhat major update to my Bitcoin faucet site!

I updated my bitcoin faucet site, Freecoins with a few things that were brought on by suggestions from others and something I wanted myself.
  1. btcthinker suggested a more clear explanation to the site and a better FAQ, which was added. Thanks to him for those suggestions!
  2. pierenjan suggested a counter showing the amount left in the faucet, which was also added! Thanks!
  3. My own addition were the graphs! They show the amount paid out over time. Each point on the graph is a payout, and they show how much was paid out each time. It looks a little sporadic because I did a few manual payouts, but it should smoothen out eventually!
Thanks for all your help and support, /bitcoin! Even though it's not much, I do appreciate it!
